Όταν οι φίλες της μητέρας μου ανοίγουν τα συρτάρια τους, η ποιότητα ενός παλιού κόσμου που χάθηκε επανέρχεται ως παιδική ανάμνηση γλυκειά και μελαγχολική.

When my mother's friends open their drawers, the quality of a past which is long gone comes bak as a sweet and melancholic childhood  memory.

Διάβασα στο Yatzer το δεκάλογο του καλού ντιζάιν κατά Dieter Rams.

I read in Yatzer the ten principles of good design according to Dieter Rams.

Good design is innovative
Good design makes a product useful
Good design is aesthetic
Good design helps us to understand a product
Good design is unobtrusive
Good design is honest
Good design is long-lasting
Good design is consequent to the last detail
Good design is concerned with the environment
Good design is as little design as possible

Σκεφτηκα ότι ξέρω ένα - δυο αντικείμενα που τα γνωρίζουμε όλοι όσοι περάσαμε από τα ελληνικά σχολεία, που ποτέ δεν τα εκτιμήσαμε, που τα μεταμορφώναμε παντοιοτρόπως και που επιτελούν και τις 10 αρχές. Ιδού.

I though that I know one or two objects which fulfill all the 10 principes. All of us who went through Greek public schools know them well, although we never really appreciated them. Here they are.

Κι ενώ αμφέβαλα ακόμη για την άποψή μου, χαζεύοντας ακόμη στο Yatzer και θαυμάζοντας ένα ωραιότατο καινούργιο Αθηναικό κλαμπ, είδα αυτό.

And while I was still wondering about it, looking around Yatzer and admiring the brand new tremendously beautiful Athenian club, I saw this.

Κόκκινο - Red

Κόκκινο. Η εποχή του. Συνδεμένο στο μυαλό μας με το Πάσχα, τη θυσία, το αίμα. Συμβολίζει το πάθος, το θυμό, την επανάσταση, τον έρωτα, τον κίνδυνο.

Red. It's the season. Going along with Easter, sacrifice, blood. It symbolizes passion, anger, revolution, love, danger.

One of my most beautiful recent findings is Michael Aaron Williams' art. He himself says that his "art is a narrative, visual poetry, making a social statement to move the viewer to action or realization"

Παλιά και φθαρμένα - Old and worn

Εντάξει, το καταλάβαμε. Φέτος το παλιό και φθαρμένο και φτηνό και προς το αγροτικό στιλ στη διακόσμηση είναι της μόδας. Εμφανίστηκε σιγά, δειλά, αρκετά γοητευτικά, το υποδεχτήκαμε με χαμόγελο στα γαλλικά και σκανδιναβικά μπλογκς και περιοδικά. Δεν αμφιβάλλω, δείχνει ωραίο στις φωτογραφήσεις. Στην πραγματικότητα όμως, όσο κι αν κανείς προσπαθήσει, ο χώρος (με τους απαραιτήτως άβαφους) τοίχους θα μοιάζει γεμάτος με παλιατσαρίες που χρησιμοποιεί κανείς γιατί δεν μπορεί να αγοράσει κάτι καινούργιο. Η επίδειξη της φτώχιας; Η μόδα της κρίσης;

Ok, we got it. The current trend in decoration is the old, worn amd cheap and (mostly) rural style. It came up gradually, slowly, lovingly; we welcomed it with a smile on the French and Scandinavian blogs and magazines. I don't doudt, it looks charming on the photographs. In reality, however, as much as we try, the place always looks full of junk we use because we cannot afford new staff. Is it the showing of poverty? The trend of crisis?

Η παρακάτω φωτογραφία δεν είναι φωτογραφία για διακόσμηση. Είναι στο τεύχος του ισπανικού Vogue του περασμένου Οκτωβρίου, αλλά στην υπερβολή της που φτάνει στα όρια του αηδιαστικού είναι ενδεικτική της τάσης.  

The photo below is not an interior styling photo. In the Spanish Vogue issue in October 2010 it is the exaggeration of the current trend and reaches the limits of disgust.

Η απέραντη γοητεία του μπλε - The endless charm of blue

Το μπλε είναι το αγαπημένο μου χρώμα από τότε που ήμουν παιδί. Μάλλον έχει να κάνει με τα γονίδια κληρονομημένα από θαλασσινούς προγόνους, γιατί εκεί που μένω εγώ το μπλε είναι μάλλον σπάνιο.

Bleu is my favorite color since I was a child. Ιt must have to do with genes inherited from my grandparents who lived by the sea. It should be because where i live blue is a rare color.
